Job description

Role: Assistive Technology Intern

Department: Technical Support

Reporting to: Development Director

Location: Cardiff

Salary: Based on Living Wage Foundation rates

Contract type: part-time, 21 hours per week, Fixed Term, 9-month contract

Purpose of the role:

The Assistive Tech Intern will support vision-impaired children, young people, and adults by sharing knowledge, guidance, and practical advice on current assistive technology. The role will help members build confidence, independence, and digital skills through peer support, demonstrations, and guidance on accessible technology.

Main responsibilities:

Support UCAN members to use assistive technology confidently and effectively.

Share practical tips, advice, and accessible technology solutions with members.

Demonstrate the use of current assistive technology, apps, and accessibility features.

Help create and collect accessible resources, guides, and technology tips.

Provide peer support to vision-impaired children, young people, and adults.

Assist with workshops, sessions, or group activities related to assistive technology.

Keep up to date with new and emerging assistive technology.

Work positively with UCAN staff, volunteers, and members.

Essential criteria

Important information:

This role has a Genuine Occupational Requirement that the successful applicant be a person who is blind or partially sighted, in line with The Equality Act 2010.

Interns need to be able to travel to the TPT Hub in London for development events throughout the course of the internship programme (costs covered by TPT).

Having not previously undertaken the Get Set Progress internship programme.

Successful applicants must have the Right to Work in the UK for the duration of the Internship. Sponsorship will not be provided.

Essential personal specifications

Excellent working knowledge of current assistive technology and accessibility tools.

Good communication and interpersonal skills.

Ability to explain technology clearly and patiently to others.

Friendly, supportive, and approachable manner.

Ability to work with children, young people, and adults.

Enthusiastic about helping others develop confidence and independence through technology.

Desirable personal specifications

Experience supporting or mentoring other vision-impaired people.

Knowledge of a range of devices, software, and accessibility apps.

Experience delivering workshops, demonstrations, or group support sessions.

Interest in digital inclusion and accessibility.

Ability to create accessible written or digital resources.
