About UCAN

UCAN Productions is a performance and creative arts charity working with blind and partially sighted children, young people and adults, as well as delivering fun and inclusive creative sessions within ALN settings. Founded in 2005, UCAN was the Lord Mayor of Cardiff’s Nominated Charity for 2023/24.

UCAN is an Arts Award Champion Centre, which means that alongside delivering engaging and accessible creative activities, we can support young people to achieve recognised Arts Award qualifications (run by Trinity College London).

What happens in the sessions

Participants take part in four creative sessions, including:

  • Fun and accessible group drama games

  • An introduction to creative music and sound technology

  • Voice and imagination-based activities

  • Creating simple “sound stories” using sound effects and spoken word

These activities contribute towards achieving the ‘Discover’ Arts Award certificate.

Arts Award is a nationally recognised qualification for young people up to age 25. It supports participants to develop their creativity, explore the arts, and gain formal recognition for their achievements in a way that is tailored to their individual interests and abilities. UCAN’s trained Arts Award advisers ensure that activities are accessible and appropriate for all learners.

Consent and data

In order for your child to be entered for the Discover Arts Award and receive their certificate, we require a brief completed UCAN consent form.

The information requested (including name, date of birth and ethnicity) is required for Arts Award registration and certification purposes only.

All data is stored securely in line with data protection legislation and is used solely for the administration of the Arts Award. It will not be shared for marketing purposes or with any third parties beyond Trinity College London, who create the certificates.

Photos and video

During sessions, we may take photos and video of your child taking part in Arts Award activities. These are used for internal evaluation and moderation purposes only and will not be shared externally.

If your child’s group takes part in the end-of-term celebration event, we will ask for a further, specific consent covering that day, since it may involve families, guests and local media. We will be in touch nearer the time.
